NORTH MANKATO, Minn., September 5th, 2023 (FUN.com) - HalloweenCostumes.com, the largest online-only retailer of Halloween costumes, has released the results of their 2023 Halloween survey. In the spirit of Halloween season, they surveyed 1,086 adults across the United States and analyzed their responses to get reveal how the United States will celebrate Halloween this year.
Key Findings:
- 81% of respondents are spending more or the same amount of money on the Halloween season this year as they did last year.
- When asked about choosing a costume:
- 25% prefer choosing classic costume options like ghosts and witches
- 23% make decisions collectively as couples, groups, or families.
- 20% opt for the easiest options like Halloween sweaters, onesies, or DIY creations
- 18% draw inspiration from TV, movies, and video games.
- 13% use social media trends and memes to influence costume choices
- This year there has been a substantial increase in affirmative responses (49%) to there being enough options for plus-size costumes. Last year, 33% answered affirmatively.
- 49% of respondents who are pet owners choose to dress up their pets, either with full costumes (27%) or accessories (22%)
Overall Findings:
With 62% choosing to decorate the exterior of their homes and 58% embellishing their interiors, it's clear that decorating is a festive tradition for most. Additionally, the inclusion of workplaces (20%) and vehicles (9%) in the decoration process showcases a broad desire to spread Halloween spirit across various places.
59% of respondents plan costumes with their family, friends or pet. Leaving the other 41% who plan their costumes solo.
62% of respondents use makeup to complete their Halloween costume. Wigs and shoes/boots are also popular choices, each at 48%. Masks are also desired by 47% of respondents. This data highlights the variety of ways people refine their Halloween looks.
There wasn’t a clear outlier with the classic costume preferences. 35% of respondents favoring witch, followed by 22% who chose the vampire costume. Ghost, skeleton, and zombie costumes received 18%, 14%, and 11% respectively. It is safe to assume that traditional Halloween costumes are here to stay.
73% of respondents are planning to paint or carve pumpkins this year. With almost ¾ of people participating in this Halloween-related activity demonstrates the joy that pumpkin painting and carving bring to celebrating Halloween.
Among the listed Halloween traditions, trick-or-treating holds the most appeal with 26% of respondents, closely followed by pumpkin picking and decorating at 19%. Watching Halloween movies ranks third with 17%, while haunted houses, Halloween parties, and hayrides/corn mazes follow with 14%, 12%, and 11% respectively, showcasing a diverse range of preferences in the surveyed group.
The Halloween aesthetics respondents prefer to show a dominant interest toward horror/scary themes (37%), followed by a kid-friendly (31%) and farmhouse/fall (23%) aesthetics, with a smaller percentage drawn to the unique Pastelloween (9%) style.
The survey indicates that a majority of respondents (48%) would choose to befriend Wednesday Addams, showcasing a preference for her intriguing and enigmatic personality. Respondents may have been swayed by the new show “Wednesday” that was released this year. Beetlejuice was selected by 18% possibly due to his mischievous charm. Dracula and Frankenstein garnered 17% and 13% respectively, while the friendly ghost Slimer received the least interest at 4%.
Alternatively, the results show that Freddy Krueger is the most fear-inducing horror character among 35% of the respondents. Chucky follows closely at 28%. Other responses include Michael Myers (23%), Jason Vorhees (8%), and Ghostface (7%).
The survey results of this year confirm that Halloween's spirit is stronger than ever.
