The Egyptian jackal god, Anubis was the guard dog of the underworld. He defended the land of the dead from wayward souls that tried to sneak past and get access to the VID (very important dead). He'd also serve up justice to those who dared desecrate the tombs of those who were just trying to rest in peace. In short, Anubis was a superhero for the Land of the Dead!
