Godzilla is more than just a crazy awesome and gigantic reptilian monster. It is also a multicultural icon that pretty literally boomed into the world from some pretty intense historical events!

Perhaps you're here because of the awesome new Legendary Godzilla series of films that have reignited or started the fire that we all now have for the Monsterverse. Maybe you're a long-time lover of the Kaiju films that feature gigantic and strange monsters locked in near eternal combat. Heck, you might even just be curious about weird lizard-like sea monster dinosaurs with energy beam breath weapons!

Well, let's dive into some details that will have you ready to monster out with our Godzilla costumes and accessories.

Kaiju (strange beast) films started out in the 50s based on a combination of interest in various giant, mythological monsters like dragons and other strange beasties but were really inspired by Japanese cultural fears of nuclear fallout and radiation. Godzilla was first named "Gojira" and became the mascot of such films when the prehistoric sea monster was awakened from its ancient slumber and empowered by nuclear radiation. Over the next 65 years, Godzilla would play the role of a deadly monster of destruction, a dangerous antihero, and even a protector of the Earth and humanity from other giant monsters!

Godzilla would have a ton of different looks over the years. It would start out looking like a massive sea reptile with bumpy scales and a mushroom cloud head that let loose radioactive energy beams. Over time, as it became more a force of protection than destruction, Godzilla would look more like a giant, bipedal lizard with chest plates and a long, thick tail. The evolution would continue to really bulking out the musculature and even gaining electrified spines all along its back and tail! And, Godzilla isn't just the main monster in Kaiju films. We celebrate this King of the Monsters in comic books, video games, cartoons, and all sorts of other crossover events!

No wonder we can't get enough of this prehistoric monster brought into the modern world. With our wide collection of costumes, you can stomp around and do your best to imitate Godzilla's iconic roar. Try inflatable costumes if you want to really get the bulk of the Daikaiju (large strange beast). We've got sleeker looks if you want to focus on the details like the spines and torso plates.

But, don't think that you've got to just be Godzilla. "King of the Monsters" wouldn't be much of a title if there weren't other creatures to combat. Rodan and Mothra make up the rest of the three great Kaiju, but the three-headed dragon, Ghidorah, and the monstrous turtle, Gamera aren't too far behind in their might. Try some Kaijin (monster men) or Seijin (alien star beings) to tell an epic tale and create your own monster movie!

Of course, we haven't even mentioned the best pairing of all. Godzilla and King Kong have a really long history of going head to head—and we've got plenty more fights to see as time goes on! We would love to see the great pictures of you in our Godzilla costumes while facing down that big old ape!

Godzilla Mask

Transform your kiddo into the fearsome kaiju Godzilla with this children’s Godzilla mask. It’s made of latex and it’s the perfect upgrade from the standard issue mask available in our child Godzilla costume set. After all, we’re sure he’s going to want to grab his share of the pizza before Rodan sneaks off with all the pepperoni slices!

Godzilla's Most Famous Opponents

Godzilla’s faced a lot of opponents over the years. Like lots! With various kaiju, mechas, doppelgangers, and all kinds of other threats, too, he’s really seen and battled it out with ‘em all. And we’re not surprised about that fact, either, because with 30-some movies on the books, he’s had a lot of ground to cover. With so many cool flicks, it’s only logical that this franchise has had such an enduring fanbase for all these years! New Godzilla movies are still in the works too, courtesy of Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse, so we thought it’d be a really great idea to recap some of his most famous opponents. So whether you’re into original Japanese Toho awesomeness, or the American-produced reboots, check out some of these classic villains to brush up on your franchise knowledge. It’s always a good idea to have some background info after all, because if you hit the streets in a Godzilla Halloween costume, you never know just who you might encounter!

King Ghidorah

King Ghidorah

A three-headed dragon ? Yeah, that’s a monster we can support! So he’s a bad guy, a.k.a. an arch-nemesis to both Godzilla and Mothra, but that just makes him cooler if you ask us! First appearing in Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster in 1964, this classic Godzilla character has made nine movies appearances counting the 2017 cameo depiction in Kong: Skull Island. Ghidorah’s usually portrayed as an ancient extraterrestrial entity. But, with over 50 years of Godzilla lore, he’s been credited with everything from destroying the Venusians five thousand years ago, to being a weaponized monster under control of various alien races, to even being depicted as the extraterrestrial alien responsible to the destruction of the dinosaurs during the Cretaceous period! Phew! King Ghidorah’s usual powers include the ability to fly and the ability for each of his mouths to fire “gravity beams.” And we’re not even going to get into his mechanized form in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. (That’s a topic for another day!) Considered to be the most famous enemy of Godzilla, this classic Toho monster is in our humble opinion also the coolest!

Mothra

Mothra

What’s up with Mothra? Well, she’s a sentient moth. And she’s a gigantic kaiju. Aaaand she’s usually depicted with two humanoid “fairies” who sing and communicate on her behalf. Got it? It’s a lot to digest, but in Toho’s Tokusatsu films, Mothra is a protector and (usually) a heroic kaiju who’s ready to do what it takes to protect Japan. She might be teaming up with Godzilla to take on King Ghidorah or she might be facing off against him like in 1964’s Mothra vs. Godzilla, but either way we think she’s super cool! With a design that looks more like a peacock butterfly than a moth, the sight of Mothra flying above the skies of Japan is almost as famous the sight of Godzilla himself. Mothra has pretty unique characteristics in comparison to other Toho daikaiju as well. With widely varying powers and abilities from film to film, she can battle with everything with a silken spray in larval form and bolt and beam weapons in full imago moth form. And serious psychic powers to boot! She’s a formidable opponent and protector in any Godzilla flick, so that makes her a seriously memorable character!

Destoroyah

Destoroyah

Destoroyah’s not an old school Godzilla villain, nope, we didn’t get a load of him until 1995’s Godzilla vs. Destoroyah. The final film in the Heisei series, this opponent was basically created to be the final boss. And a final boss is exactly what he was. Spawned from the Oxygen Destroyer weapon that appeared in the first Godzilla film back in 1954, this Kaiju kept growing until he was nearly twice the size of Godzilla and ready for the final showdown. Easily the most merciless and evil of all of Godzilla’s opponents, he’s considered by many to be Godzilla’s ultimate foe as well. This awesome winged baddie went into battle using his Micro-Oxygen beam and Laser Horn to battle both Godzilla and Godzilla Junior. Between the three of them facing off, and the Japan Self Defense Force working to do what they could to protect humanity, the final showdown comes with a very, very high cost. But the Godzilla family comes out the winner if you ask us!

Gigan

Gigan

Buzzsaw time in a Godzilla flick? Then we must be talking about Gigan. With three epic showdowns in Godzilla vs. Gigan (1972), Godzilla vs Megalon (1973), and Godzilla: Final Wars (2005), this beastly kaiju is firmly entrenched as one of the big guy’s all-time ultimate foes. Widely considered to be one of the most brutal and violent villains, too, we’re not surprised that Gigan makes most top ten lists! Of course, he’s not a purely organic kaiju: he’s a cybernetic space monster who’s always ready for an all-out knockdown brawl. The massive circular saw is pretty good for shredding up his opponents in close quarters battle, and if he has to attack from arm’s length, his razor-sharp hooked blades means he can inflict some serious damage. Originally under the control of the Nebula M Space Hunter aliens, his story hasn’t changed much over the years, which firmly places him highly in Godzilla lore!

Mechagodzilla

Mechagodzilla

If you thought a cybernetic monster was a big deal, how ‘bout when Godzilla went toe to toe with his doppelganger mecha? That’s right, 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla marked the entrance of the robotic extraterrestrial villain into the franchise. And really, the franchise has never been the same. Appearing in five feature films in various incarnations, Mechagodzilla proved to be a formidable foe for Godzilla whenever they faced off. Measuring up at 50 meters tall and weighing 40,000 tons, the original Showa Mechagodzilla isn’t just a formidable mecha, it represents outright mechanized devastation. (Did we mention that it’s made out of space titanium!?) With an armament that includes the capability to launch missiles, fire energy blasts, and the capability to form a protective force field, it’s the perfect opponent to go the distance with Mr. Zilla. Subsequent versions of the beast include Mechagodzilla II and Super-Mechagodzilla, because brawling mechas proved to be a very popular and entertaining villain for Godzilla to battle.

M.U.T.O.

M.U.T.O.

Godzilla (2014) wanted to break new territory with a completely original monster opponent for Mr. G, and MUTOs marked the first new villains in the franchise since 2000. As a reboot film that was also launching Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse, the MUTOs made a big impression. Probably due to their size! After all, their acronym stands for “Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organism.” This strange species had both a male and a female specimen who were ready to wreak havoc on Earth. Each sex had specific traits, but they both featured a strange metallic exoskeleton. The female MUTO was the bigger of the two, standing at over 91 meters tall, but the male specimen was growing and catching up in size as he fed on humanity’s available radiation sources. As ancient parasites that seem to originate from the same era as Godzilla himself, these villains proved to be a good choice to usher in a new era for the famous franchise.
