The toga was unique to Rome. It was wrapped and draped around the body over a tunic. Wearing a toga was a privilege reserved for adult male Roman citizens. When the son of a citizen reached puberty, he received his first toga as a rite of passage. Stripes of color on the border of a toga were emblems of political rank.

But not all eligible citizens had togas. A toga was expensive to start with, cumbersome to wear, and almost impossible to don without help. So in actual practice only wealthy citizens who could afford slaves wore togas. Everyone else just wore the tunic. Married women wore a garment called a stola over their tunics.  It was wrapped and draped almost like a toga, but was lighter and less cumbersome.

If you're planning a college toga party you may not care about these historical niceties. That's not what a toga party is about! A toga party is about re-creating the decadence and perhaps debauchery of the waning Roman Empire. So have as much fun as you want. Just don't try to pass it off as historically accurate.

Caesar Costumes

You can’t talk about togas without mentioning some of the most power people that wore them! Julius Caesar might be the first person that people think of when they hear the word toga. After all, the guy made a name for himself as a prominent military leader and was instrumental in the Gallic Wars. Caesar Wig

Caesar Wig

Caesar was known for a lot of things. He had great military prowess, he ruled with an iron fist, and he had various romances with powerful women. But, most importantly, he gave us the Caesar haircut! It’s a classic cut that men have been wearing for over 2000 years. Now, if you don’t have the time to head out and get a haircut yourself, you can just use this Caesar wig. It’s the easiest way to get the look without visiting a barber.

Goddess Wig

Goddess Wig

Gods and goddesses were a big part of Greek and Roman life, so using a toga to dress like a goddess is a pretty good plan. It’s incredibly easy to do with Greek goddess wig! It’s one of our easy to use costume wigs, so it comes with an elastic band. All you need to do is slip it on over your head and you’ll be ready to ascend to your place on Mount Olympus.

Greek Sword

Greek Sword

Both Greeks and Romans can both agree on one thing besides togas: swords are awesome. While it’s not really a good idea to walk around with a blade in common society nowadays, you can still carry around a toy one! This Greek sword comes from the movie 300 and is based on the one wielded by Themistokles. Pair it with your toga and you’ll look like a fierce warrior or gladiator.

Sandals

Sandals

We might think of wearing sandals to the beach for some fun in the sun, but Romans used to wear sandals all the time. Even military soldiers wore a pair of caligae into combat. The main advantage of these sandals was that they allowed ventilation and helped prevent nasty blisters on the feet. While we don’t recommend going on any marches wearing these Roman sandals, they do provide an authentic look for your Roman toga costume.
