Bill Murray is a legend of comedy film and television. He's played so many unforgettable characters, from Dr. Peter Venkman busting ghosts to Phil Connors living the same day over and over and over, not to mention his earlier years on Saturday Night Live. Since we're HalloweenCostumes.com, we wanted to revisit Bill Murray's costumes from his most iconic roles!
1. Peter Venkman in Ghostbusters (1984)

When we think of Bill Murray, the first character we think of is Dr. Peter Venkman from Ghostbusters. The khaki jumpsuit with the "VENKMAN" name tag and that iconic proton pack on his back is instantly recognizable. This costume isn't just a piece of clothing. It's a symbol of the 80s! Whether you're a fan of the original film or the subsequent sequels, you know that Murray's Venkman is always ready to save the day with a sarcastic quip.
2. Phil Connors in Groundhog Day (1993)

In Groundhog Day, cynical weatherman Phil Connors finds himself reliving the same day over and over. His costume, which consists of a heavy overcoat, scarf, and gloves, is as practical as it is memorable. Unfortunately, there are no official Groundhog Day costumes, but you can make your own with this gangster costume overcoat plus a scarf and gloves. You might even have the accessories in your closet!
3. John Winger in Stripes (1981)
Soldier Costume | Army Boots |
In Stripes, Bill Murray plays John Winger, a down-on-his-luck taxi driver who decides to join the army. The costume is classic military fatigues: green jacket and pants, with combat boots. This look perfectly complements Murray's everyman appeal, transforming him into a reluctant soldier whose irreverence and humor bring levity to the rigors of basic training.
4. Garfield in Garfield (2004)
Though Bill Murray didn't physically wear a costume for Garfield, his voice brought the lasagna-loving cat to life. Unfortunately, Murray's distinctive voice and brand of sarcasm didn't resonate with audiences. However, you can still dress up as Garfield with this officially licensed costume—lasagna not included!
5. Nick the Lounge Singer on Saturday Night Live (1977)

During his time on Saturday Night Live, Bill Murray created one of his most beloved characters: Nick the Lounge Singer. Nick's gaudy tuxedos, complete with accessories like a bandana or Hawaiian lei, perfectly capture the cheesy yet endearing charm of a lounge performer. Pair this costume with a microphone and some exaggerated crooning, and you'll be the star of any party. (We first wrote about this costume in our article on SNL Halloween costumes.)
6. Superman and Clark Kent on Saturday Night Live (1979)

Margot Kidder became famous for playing Lois Lane in 1978's Superman, so of course she reprised the role when hosting Saturday Night Live in 1979. Bill Murray played her husband, Superman, as they hosted a party for fellow superheroes the Flash, the Hulk, Spider-Man, the Thing, and others—including the first live-action appearance of Ant-Man (played by Garrett Morris). Eventually, Superman leaves the party, and Murray returns as Clark Kent. You could try this gag at a Halloween party, or just amuse everyone by recreating Murray's hilarious Superman hops!
Caddyshack and Other Roles
The great thing about many iconic Bill Murray roles is that you might have what you need in your closet. For Carl Spackler in Caddyshack, just look for a camo bucket hat and a gray t-shirt. For Bob Wiley in What About Bob?, you can get by with an orange life preserver and some rope. And an orange stocking cap and blue button-down shirt should get you most of the way towards a recognizable Steve Zissou costume!
Which of these iconic roles was your favorite? Will you be wearing any of these costumes at Halloween or a costume party? Tell us about it in the comments below.
