by |September 26, 2012

PSY's Gangnam Style took over the world in 2012! The music video for the hit song became a global sensation and even became the most-liked YouTube video in history during its time. Much of that success comes from the music video's pure randomness and killer dance moves. People even did flash mobs worldwide doing the popular dance. Celebrities such as Tom Cruise and Britney Spears even fell under the spell of this wild Korean pop star by tweeting their love of this wildly fantastic music video. So, just in time for Halloween, we'll get you set to transform you into PSY, the king of exploding awesomeness, and his dance-off partner, Yoo Jae-Suk.

To start your PSY costume, you'll need a few things to get the look just right. You'll need black dress pants, a white tux shirt, a black bow tie, black-and-white wingtip shoes, a blue suit coat, and black sunglasses. With all these things, you'll be ready to rock a sandbox beach party!

2. Dress Shirt Hack (Optional)

Dress Shirt Hack

It takes a bit of work to get PSY's Gangnam Style costume just right. To cut down on layers if you expect to get hot, take your white tux shirt and cut the sleeves off at the shoulder seams. This way, you'll feel cooler when you're dancing all night long. You can also save the cuffs and attach them inside the ends of the sleeves so no one will know you're not wearing the whole shirt!

3. Black Accents on the Blue Tuxedo Jacket

For the suit coat, you need to pick up a black fabric marker from any arts and crafts store. Use the marker to color in the trim along the lapels and the bottom, as well as the trim on the pockets. You may want to place cardboard or paper underneath the lapels so the black marker doesn't accidentally transfer onto the body of the suit before it dries.

We even have a how-to for Yoo Jae-Suk's yellow outfit planned out for you to recreate the epic dance-off in the music video. (Can you say guy's duo costume idea?!?)  For his costume, we have the perfect yellow tux pants, a yellow jacket, a black wig, white-rimmed sunglasses, and bee tights to help you make his scarf.

2. Yellow-and-Black Striped Scarf

To make the scarf, you take a pair of our black and yellow tights and cut them in half between the legs of the tights.

Sewing the Scarf

Then, use a sewing machine to sew the two pieces together. When the scarf is sewn, you can tie it around your neck.

3. Trimming Your Black Wig

Next, the black hair wig will need some work to get Yoo Jae-Suk's hair perfect. Be careful cutting the back and sides of the wig, as this will give it more of a bowl-cut hairstyle. (You can't put it back once you cut it off!) When you're done, you'll look as smooth as Yoo Jae-Suk when he exited the sports car!
